Who We Are:
Jorge Luis Umana -
Board of Directors President and co-founder
Jorge Luis prides himself on being somewhat of a gourmet coffee expert, intrepid explorer and of course conservationist in the Alto Quepos- Tarrazu Mountains. It is fair to say that Jorge is of no fixed abode; however he does feel completely at home in the Jungle and has frequented the Jurassic Trail area for over 20 years now.
Jorge Luis ’ greatest love is his Don Evelio Gourmet Coffee business. His other loves include the ecology and conservation of Alto Quepos Jurassic Trail properties and last but by no means least, is his passion for the internet and copious amounts of good food, especially Tamales and Gallo Pinto!
Jorge Luis always looks forward to his adventures on the Jurassic Trail - Alto Quepos Mountains and takes great joy in inviting travelers for a great cup of freshly brew coffee from his farm.
Jurassic Trail Tours History
A more detailed account on how the project was conceived:
Jurassic Trail in the Naranjillo valley is part of Fincas Tarrazu Cafe S.A. group of companies which have a long and
interesting history.
In May 1992 Jorge Luis Umana, biggest shareholder of the group, recognised the potential of the Tarrazu Alto Quepos Mountains and
bought many acres of forest in the Naranjillo valley into its stable of high quality, iconic coffee farmland.
Within the Fincas Tarrazu Cafe S.A. Group umbrella are Don Evelio Coffee Farms in the Tarrazu valley and the pristine Alto Quepos Forest Reserve near the Manuel Antonio, Quepos National Park.
The Jurassic Trail property, near the town of Naranjillo, started life back in 1996 when Jorge Luis Umana
opened up a track for guided walks. The walk was further developed by Jorge Luis Umana's brother, Diego.
In 2005 the Jurassic Trail Base Camp # 1 opened where the old cattle farm shack is, at the top of the property at
3 608 feet (1100 meters ) above sea level and by early January 2006
introduced riverbed hiking to the walk itinerary, which runs by the Naranjillo river at the lowest point in the property, at
1 968 feet ( 600 meters ) above sea level.
Jorge Luis Umana
took up the promising business, and registered the Jurassic Trail Tourism
Company. Its first year of operation was the summer of 2004/2005. Jorge Luis also made extensive additions and improvements to buildings that were originally in the area. Prior to their purchase there was no electricity, running water, bathrooms or toilets in the lodge site. In addition they needed to develop their own trails and lodges to make the operation viable and self sufficient. Jorge Luis Umana purchased the Toyota Land Cruiser gasoline powered vintage SUV shortly thereafter.
A strong customer focus was
also introduced with time and effort being placed on getting the
product right for the customer. The result has been a 100% recommend
rate of the Jurassic Trail Tours to friends and family from scores of the
past customers that have been surveyed.
Today the
Jurassic Trail Tours Company is renowned as one of Costa Rica's greatest tour operator
with a diverse range of scenery, plant and wildlife and distinctly different
culture experiences that are unequalled by any other in the country.
Jurassic Trail Tours Company will continue to build on its existing strengths while developing
and implementing a strategy that will continually improve upon the outstanding
wilderness and culture experience that is currently delivered to those who are fortunate
enough to visit the Jurassic Trail Tarrazu - Quepos Mountains.
